Main Idea

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep is the game that focuses mainly on the deep past of the KH series, set ten years prior to Kingdom Hearts 1. The characters of the game are Ven, Aqua, Terra, an old man, known as Master Xehanort, and a reflection of him with Dark Riku's costume, you may have seen these characters on the Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix+ secret ending.

Characters

Ven: He looks just like Roxas...and shares some connections with him. His true identity will be explored in the game. Ven is one of three playable characters in Birth by Sleep, with Nomura promising him a big role.

Aqua: A look-alike Kairi for her form of the game, and she seems to have a strong relation with Ven. So far her role in this game is undefined, as she hasn’t been mentioned a lot. Also known as the "mystery girl" due to lack of info on her.

http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3664/03208758bs1.png

Terra: Seems like Riku, in other words, more strong, leader, more powerful, etc., Terra looks like a younger version of Xehanort too. Already seen previously in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix as a boss, ' the Enigmatic Soldier', he is now one of the three playable characters you can control in a choice of three different scenarios.

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/7180/443vi7.png

Master Xehanort: The "Bald Old Man" and his apprentice are powerful, mysterious characters that disappeared, resulting in Terra and the others going in search of them. Master Xehanort's clothes are almost an exact replica of those worn by Xehanort's Heartless, (the main villain in Kingdom Hearts 1). Whether or not this has any meaning is yet to be discovered.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9493/855a8f10gt6.jpg

All these characters have a meaning in their names, Ven means air, like Sora; Aqua means ocean or water, same as Kairi; and Terra means earth, the name Riku has a different definition but most likely like Terra's name.

Time Setting

Birth By Sleep is set ten years before KH1, in a deep past, this game may show us why Sora was the chosen one, same as his relation with Riku and Kairi.

Console

Birth By Sleep will come for the PSP, this has been announced officially by TGS 2007, the release date hasn't been confirmed, but what is known is that this game will be the last release of the three handheld games.

Gameplay

An improved version of the deck system used in CoM will be used in Birth by Sleep. However, instead of cards, the user will choose from commands, which will be implemented into their menu. Birth by Sleep's gameplay follows a familiar style. It is action orientated, but the quality is the same as the PS2 games. Attack with the x button, use magic and special attacks with the triangle button. When the gauge fills, a unique special move can be used.

Trivia

• Nomura hints that not all three Keybladers are connected to the three heroes of Kingdom Hearts II.
• Aqua's voice actor is said to sound very similar to the Japanese voice actress for Paine in Kingdom Hearts II.

Trailer Description By Famitsu

Scenes of the ending of Kingdom Hearts 1 flash by on the screen, and two phrases are seen clearly onscreen. One reads "Deep Past" and the other "Shut-Eyes gives birth to the concealed fate."

We are then confronted by a young boy who looks like Roxas conversing with another young boy with black hair. Their surroundings seem to resemble Hallow Bastion (Radiant Garden). The name "Ven" is thrown outward, referring to the boy who looks like Roxas.

The scene change various times before stopping at an iamge of the Old Man from the KH2FM+ secret ending. He is called "Master Xehanort" by Terra. Soon after, Terra summons his keyblade and the screen chandes.

Various worlds are shown, and one of which is familiar to us all. "Olympus Colliseum" is making another comeback, followed by a brand new world, that of which resembles Sleeping Beauty.

The video then changes back to Terra battling against a dark figure, whom you can tell is male. This is the same man from the Secret Ending of KH2FM+, the one who the Old Man creates. Terra is able to forceably get the man's helmet off, but his face is concealed.

King Mickey is shown summoning kis keyblde, and then the scene changes very quicly to Terra on a beach. He seems to be watching two boys play in the ocen. After he rests his weapon into the ground, the two boys he was watching are clearer and they look like Sora and Riku. Soon after, Terra says "Please don't depend on me, just erase me... friend."

The phrase "Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep" arises.

Birth by Sleep Media: Interviews

(will be updated)

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--SEPTEMBER 2007

Interviewer: Can you tell us a bit about the development of Birth By Sleep?

Nomura: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is being worked on by the same team that created re: Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep's development had originally started before the development of re: CoM, but production was stopped to complete re: CoM. At first it felt a bit weird starting the project again. I believe this project started before the other two of the Kingdom Hearts games, and I also believe it will be the last to hit the market.

Interviewer: The game still relates to Birth By Sleep? [KH2: FM+'s secret ending]

Nomura: The secret ending [from KH2: FM+] is actually a scene from Birth By Sleep, therefore the title of the game is also the same. However, because it is difficult to express such a violent battle as playable content, the secret ending [from KH2: FM+] is an image (scene?) of the end.(Is he hinting that this is how Birth by Sleep will end or something else?)

Interviewer: How much talk was put into it, as it seems to be a game taking place in the past.

Nomura: This game goes the farthest back in the Kingdom Hearts timeline, about ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts. There is a screenshot of two children playing on the beach, and I believe the fans can understand what that means. [Sora and Riku as children?]

Interviewer: In the story it's said that there are "Three Scenarios by Three Heroes". Is there a relation between each scenario?

Nomura: There are three Heroes: Terra, Ven, and another character in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. We have already prepared a story for each of them. Therefore, in a way you can say three games were made at the same time. (Laughs) It's difficult to zap through the explanation right now, as we are still creating all of the scenarios. However, the beginning will be a bit hard to understand, but by completing all three scenarios, the player will understand the entire story.

Interviewer: Do the names of the three heroes represent something?

Nomura: In Kingdom Hearts, Sora meant Sky, Riku meant Land, and Kairi meant Sea. In this game, the three meanings make a large impact on the game.

Interviewer: Do all of the scenarios take place at the same time?

Nomura: All of the scenarios do take place around the same time, however there are also some gaps between the timelines. Also there are times when all three heroes will meet.

Interviewer: Is the playing order [for the scenarios] decided yet?

Nomura: I believe it would be better if we gave the players a freedom of choice. However this is still being talked about, but I believe it would be better to choose whoever you want out of the three.

Interviewer: What is the importance of story?

Nomura: For example, the name Xehanort is bought up in Kingdom Hearts 2. The game will answer several things like, "Why is the elderly person who appears in Birth by Sleep bringing up the same name?" and ,"Why is he wearing the same clothes as Ansem in the original Kingdom Hearts?" Another thing I want to bring up, is ,"Ven has the same hairstyle, face, clothes, and voice of Roxas, but just who is he?

Interviewer: Is the voice actor of Ven the same as Roxas?

Nomura: Yes, it is the same actor. Therefore the player will only look at Ven as Roxas from Kingdom Hearts 2.

Interviewer: However, are Roxas and Ven really the same character? Moreover, what about the mystery surrounding the existence of Ven and Roxas?

These are keys that will be revealed from playing Birth By Sleep. You will be able to separate Ven from Roxas with ease; I will hint though by connecting the story between Roxas and Sora, you will understand who Ven is.

Interviewer: May I believe that the one you fight in KH2FM+, and Terra are the same person? Because they both use a very similar kind of Keyblade.

Nomura: If they really are the same person or not is uncertain, though it doesn't matter if you think they are the same person.

Interviewer: In Birth by Sleep, after all three are divided, the king appears?

Nomura: It may be deeply related to the story, however I cannot tell whether or not that he is a"King" at that current age. This is because the development of Birth by Sleep will contain a very serious story.

Interviewer: In Birth by Sleep, is the gameplay done by choosing action commands lined up in command list?

Nomura: I believe it is necessary to say first, The Command Menu that was shown to the public [A.K.A scans, and video] has now changed. A system close to that of re:COM has been created, feeling like a command deck. However, the present screen shots show it was a bit too close to the idea of re:COM. The battle screens you see in the images now, have already been changed. However the operating sense is similar to that of the Kingdom Hearts series. The gameplay has slight influence from the DS game "It's a Wonderful World".

Interviewer: Are there any features for the Growth System? (Leveling System)

Nomura: A new Growth System has been added into the game, in which you have to match four obligations with the scenario (?). We tried this variously because it was a bit hard with the PSP. However we made the best use of its Analog.

Interviewer: Are there new enemies you can confirm that are not shown in the screens?

Nomura: The new enemy is not a Heartless, or a Nobody, because the story takes place before even they appear. I can only give out more information, little by little, as time passes: an example being like the Shadow enemies that are heartless, and the Dusk enemies that are nobodies.

Interviewer: With the PSP, will it be possible for two people to communicate through a connection method?

Nomura: It's too early to answer that, however, there will be some features that will be taking advantage of the PSP.

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--OCTOBER 2007

The Osaka team lead the development on Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. Does this mean they will handle BBS?

Nomura: Development started earlier than Re:CoM. However, since Re:COM needed to be improved a lot, the production of BBS was interrupted.

Will the secret movie in KH2: FM+ play an important role in BBS?

Nomura: Yes.

Does BBS take place before the first Kingdom Hearts game?

Nomura: Yes. However, it doesn't start immediately before Kingdom Hearts.

Is there any significance to the names of Terra and the other characters?

Nomura: Going back to the names’ origins, Terra is Earth and Ven is Wind. However, Ven’s real name is longer--this is just an alias.

The age of Master Xehanort is different from the Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts II. What is their connection? And what about the person who looks like Roxas?

Nomura: There’s a mystery as to who each character is in the story, which I cannot reveal right now.

About the master who taught the three new characters—is he from the current series?

Nomura: I can't say.

Will the story advance around these three new people?

Nomura: Yes, the story is also pretty complex in this game, and can become very serious. Watanabe, who took charge of the scenarios, is very skillful at this. He will also supervise some of the scenarios in the other two titles [358/2 Days and Coded]. This game will be a bit challenging, since the game will be featuring the aspect of three people.

Will there be an individual story for each of them?

Yasushi: Yes, also the gameplay and feeling for each of their play-throughs will be different. It will feel as if it is three games in one.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, there was a Sora chapter and a Riku chapter. Would you call these ‘two scenarios’ [in the same way that BBS will feature three scenarios]?

Yasushi: Yes, however, in this case completing one story will create more mysteries for the other characters, making you wanting to play them to figure out the mysteries.

Like zapping?

Yasushi: Well it depends, in a way the game wouldn't be the same if we changed it's contents.

Yoshimoto: It's not really easy to explain right now, please wait to see more in the future. *Laughs*

How about the composition of the worlds? Where do you begin, and does it become an adventure when you go into a Disney World?

Yasushi: I think that it will be better to keep a normal feeling for Disney Worlds, but we will also have new worlds as well. Of course, there will also be two or more new worlds that will surprise you.

How much will people enjoy these games?

Nomura: Mainly, players will enjoy the storyline, and because this game will take place in the past, the Disney Worlds will also have a little timeshift as well.

When the battle images were shown to the public, there was a new enemy that wasn't a Heartless or a Nobody. What is it?

Nomura: It is neither a Heartless or a Nobody, this is a new type of enemy. Because the existence of these creatures came before Heartless and Nobodies, a starting point needs to be imagined, and it became a wild concept.

Yasushi: Basically it becomes wild. However, its moves are fast!

What will happen with the battle system? As well as the "Lingering Spirit" and the characters in the Secret Movie?

Yasushi: That was done as a hint, because it's an image from the end. Also, this game will be introducing a new system!

Nomura: It might be one of the most current games of the series that have been announced during this time. Also the Level system features a new idea that has not been seen before.

Yasushi: "When you absorb it in what?" *Laughs* It's considered as a Novel, and an impact to the leveling system.

Yoshimoto: It's really interesting actually. I think you'll be able to understand it more if you saw it from an image, so please wait a while longer.
Nomura: This growth system was made, by one person.

Can you give a hint?

Yasushi: .....The level up is like growing.

Is it possible to have a gamers play by bringing their PSPs together, co-op style?

Yoshimoto: Well, we are thinking by a co-operation between people, or even competing against each other. We are trying to think of an element that could make use of the PSP fully.

Nomura: Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days has a different concept, where the multiplayer is different.

Though there seems to be variety in the beginning of the story, the game system also seems to have more content to make it enjoyable.

Yoshimoto: Well, the idea first came out really fast, and changed rapidly as well. It was interesting to see the traditional gameplay of Kingdom Hearts, but at the same time the difficulty of the gameplay as well.

Nomura: This is a game which the variety can play, even if all the mysteries in the story were solved.

Yasushi: From here on after, the game is just going to get better. The battle system will also be enjoyable. The feeling of the game will be as close to Kingdom Hearts as possible, but with a few twists.

Yoshimoto: Also even though the game will be more serious, it will please the Disney fans. The worlds are prepared with a surprise even though the story is serious. I think the mixture of Disney with this will be interesting.

By the way, this game was announced at the same time as Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts: Coded. Were you anxious?

Yasushi: We were very anxious about everything, the system and the story. I thought it was considerate to show those through the PV shown at the Tokyo Game Show.

Nomura: This game will have to wait, sadly. However, we also need to think about the sales, ultimately.

Stupid word limit! Here's Part 2:

FAMITSU INTERVIEW (DKΣ3713 EDITION)--AUGUST 2008

In the recent trailer, their are lines alluding to Master Xehanort aiming for those with hearts of pure light. Is Master Xehanort's goal also to take over the world?

Nomura: It certainly indicates what he's interested in, but that's the first of Master Xehanort's intentions.

The story follows the viewpoints of the three characters individually, but what happens when the three characters interact together?

Nomura: The three characters will start out together, and then afterwards each of their stories will begin respectively. Within the story, the main characters may encounter one another. The three share the main goal of chasing after Master Xehanort who has disappeared, though each character's exact goal is subtly different.

As for original masters, they who teach the methods of wielding the keyblade to their pupils, do they exist?

Nomura: Not just that, but also the role of keyblade users, since the thoughts of each master differs, it's their spirit being taught. The reason why a master must train others to use the keyblade is explained in this game.

The voice of Snow White is very quiet.

Nomura: Actually, we choice a voice that matched the old version of "Snow White" that was released in Japan (1950), so it's the original one, so to speak.

The changes to the style of battling are an interesting idea.

Nomura: Some players might have wanted a change in strategy. Initially, the player was free to rearrange the commands, as proposed by the team in Osaka, now such a form has been expanded upon. They said, "We want a system different than the form changes of Kingdom Hearts II".

How about the Shoot Lock System?

Nomura: I asked, "is it difficult to implement?" when the system was being worked on, it was also written into the first planning stages. But for Birth by Sleep, there is still a lot hidden within the system.

What of the enemies called "unbirths"?

Nomura: There is meaning in various ways, adding "un" creates the opposite meaning of "birth" thus the "unbirth". With this, the "unborn" is given real meaning. Unbirths designate the feeling of this game's motif. The kind of existence they have will be revealed soon.

During a battle, there are various circumstances indicating commands.

Nomura: It's the developed system of the 'reaction command'. At first, the Birth by Sleep system was designed to be closer to the original series, but it has evolved a lot. Because it is considerably high speed, the first time players may be a bit surprised.

Even the boss battles have been elaborated compared to the previous ones.

Nomura: The Osaka team has a lot of affection for the enemies. It was handed over to the staff and they were asked to please try it out. They were watched over as they played it. When the player had to be more offensive, they said things like, "It's different! I really can be more of a kid!!" or "Ah, it's strange..." (Smiles)

Their affection is contagious. (Smiles)

Nomura: Anyways, I think that the testing of various things for the battle system is being finished.

DEGEKI WII + DS--SEPTEMBER 2008

What kind of theme is drawn up in the story of KH Birth by Sleep?

Nomura: The theme seems to revolves between "connections of the heart" and "fate." When it is played last, the player will understand that the KH story that take place afterwards is one "not of chance, but a story that becomes inevitable." Unlike the tender atmosphere of the older games, this one is serious. Because it is a very sad story, people have asked "how do you manage it?" when involving Disney works. (Smiles) A painful story unfolds. Though KH "isn't that kind of thing", this time we'll try to progress the story in that direction.

Terra, Ventus, and Aqua appear as the main three characters, but what kind of characters are each of them?

Nomura: Terra is the type who makes his goal's his highest priority. But he's not a bad fellow, though his stress on obtaining his goals causes conflict. The story of Ventus seems to feel closer to the ones of KH seen so far. He is able to make friends with the dwellers of the worlds he visits and is the type to blend into a world naturally. Aqua is a serious character, she has a steady mind and often worries about the other two. She is eyewitness to the recent events, therefore she takes that sort of a standpoint.

How does the story of these three advance?

Nomura: They advance by taking separate actions on the same time axis. For example, when Terra visits a certain world and the other two people have not been there yet. There by naturally the connection to the particular world changes too. Such story development will really be the charm of Birth by Sleep.

As for the play order of each character, can the player decide?

Nomura: I assume that it's being developed right now. Therefore depending on the order chosen by the player, if they have not played as Terra yet, and they choose Aqua and start visiting worlds with her, they'll understand the actions of Terra early. (Smiles) That might not be what was expected or hoped for, but I think it will be a little interesting.

If all 3 characters come together in the ending, will the entire image of the story become clear?

Nomura: Indeed. For instance, the mysteries of Terra are revealed in Ventus's story. Overall, it'll have this type of composition.

Terra is power based, and the from the demo it's obvious Ventus is based on combo + speed, but what type of character is Aqua?

Nomura: Aqua is special. As for the type, she is magic based, though it is considerably tricky. Fight while rotating like a spinning object, doing cartwheels, that sort of thing. (Smiles)

After grasping the feel of the game play, the combat system seems considerably based on powering up.

Nomura: Seems like it, with locking on to multiple enemies using the Shoot Lock System to attack and customizing the deck of skills. At the demo the deck of skills was already pre set, but in the actual game you'll be able to edit it freely. At first Birth by Sleep was expected to have a fighting system closest to the older games, but now it seems that KH 358/2 Days is and Birth by Sleep's system has evolved. The feeling is more like, "you can't fight like Sora with this system," therefore a real taste of managing the keyblade is shown.

Of the stories heard in these three titles, it seems Birth by Sleep will probably be the last to release, are you thinking about future titles after these?

Nomura: Considering the nature the KH series, I do not intend to end it here. Even as Birth by Sleep is being made, I am thinking about the future and how it connects. Thus, please continue to support the KH series.

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--OCTOBER 2008

If 358/2 Days was emphasizing Xion, then was Birth by Sleep emphasizing Aqua?

Nomura: Aqua's battle scenes were exhibited for the first time to the public, her movement is fast and easy to overlook. So that you don't lose sight of her, concentrate and try to keep your eyes on her. Frankly speaking, since its hard to see clearly, she is teleporting in the battle scenes. Because the teleportation occurs instantaneously, it's hard to catch sight of. (Laughs)

This needs to be brought up: There is no such thing as a REAL Birth by Sleep cover. It doesn't exist to any of us right now. If you see boxart for ANY of the three handheld games, then you can be absolutely certain that it is fan-made. This should already be obvious, since most of them are badly designed, with many spelling errors and such. Anyway this is only a handful of the Birth by Sleep covers floating around the internet, not all of them. Nobody should believe any of them.

Oh, and a menu screen. Lots of people have already fallen for this one, but it's also a fake:
