Main Idea

The game focuses mainly on the story of Roxas in Organization 13. It will explain Organization 13's daily life, with all the troubles and problems, this game will probably explain more DiZ's life, we can say that at the end of the game we could see the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2. The title "358/ 2" sounds illogical, but at the end of the game it will explain the title itself.

Characters

Every Organization 13 character WILL be playable in Multiplayer mode, according to Tetsuya Nomura. We also know that a 14th member will be introduced - a female member - but nothing is known about her yet, except that she isn't Naminé and that she wasn’t present in Kingdom Hearts 2. Riku too, has been confirmed as a battle against Roxas.

Console

Kingdom Hearts 358/ 2 Days will come out for the Nintendo DS, with brand new features for the DS, this has been confirmed by TGS 2007.

Timeline

This game takes place from Roxas’ birth, (in KH1), his entrance and time in the Organization, into the events of CoM, and when he leaves to find more about himself and his TRUE self, and then eventually, when he gets taken to the digitized Twilight Town.

Gameplay

There will be single and multiplayer options in this game, and Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that there is a bonus to using both modes:

“The character’s growth is shared between the two modes,”

Also during multiplayer mode, the bottom screen of the DS can be used as a chat system, if you wish. Players will be able to communicate with each other as they play the game; by drawing pictures on the screen! Although not official yet, Nomura and his team are planning to add some further plans to this feature.

• The full meaning behind the title can only be understood once you complete the game.
• You will still be going through Disney Worlds.
• The first idea that came from this game was to show the daily life of the Organization.
• Roxas vs Riku will be in the game.
• Multiplayer mode is not related at all to the story.
• Every member has a unique style of gameplay, also once you defeat the boss you can replay the mission again as much as you want to. There are different missions for each character.

• Kingdom Hearts: 358 Days / 2 has been confirmed for a Spring 2009 release date. An international release date has yet to be published, however, fans are hoping for a Winter 2009 date.
• The 14th Member's name is Xion and she seems to have some sort of connection with Kairi.
• Xion is being reported to have dark skin, and dark hair with the face structure and voice of Kairi. She reportedly has very vibrant blue eyes that stick out due to her skin and hair being so dark. Her hair is long on the left side of her head, and it looks like a mix of Kairi's original haircut from the first Kingdom Hearts and Aqua's hairstyle.


Trailer Description By Famitsu:

We are introduced with the scene where Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories had came to an end, and are then confronted with the phrase "The other side attached to Sora still sleeps", along with "The mind comes back whenever they touch."

The video then focuses upon Roxas and Axel, sitting atop the clock tower in Twilight Town. This seems to be the same scene from Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix+. Soon after, the video shows Roxas being invited into Organization XIII. He is being greeted by all, and introduces himself, and they do the same to him. Then the scene fades into Roxas actually joining the Organization.

Following this is a short clip of Mickey talking about Axel, and Saix near Roxas. Roxas is shown pulling out both of his keyblades, and it moves into gameplay. The gameplay confirms indifenatley that you may play with Roxas, Axel, Saix and Xigbar.

Xemnas then mentions something very interesting. He explains that a 14th member has joined their Organization, and that this member is female. This scene is quickly followed by the title of the game: "Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days" and a whsipering Roxas saying "I will disappear from this world in 151 days"

• The trailer begins with the emotional line, "I can't remember anymore".
• The 14th member is shown, she wields a keyblade.
• She seems related to Kairi/Namine, her voice sounds the same as Kairi's.
• If Namine's writes out distinct memories, they become connected. (Note: Bad translation, very hard to understand!)
• In multiplayer, every mission is ended with a "results" screen. The players (two to four) are ranked based on how well they played. They are scored sitting on chairs highest to lowest like that of the white room in Castle Oblivion. They mentioned this idea in an interview.
• The trailer also shows Roxas being accompanied by Organization members in single mode.

Twilight Town, the white room.
Xion has come to see Namine.
Namine: "I wanted to meet you, Xion."

Xion removes her hood, completely revealing her face.

Destiny Islands, along the shore.
Roxas picks up a seashell.

Twilight Town, on the clock tower.
Roxas: "It is the 255th day since I entered the Organization.
Axel: "You've memorized the number of days?"
Roxas: "I want to remember that I was born."

Twilight Town, in the forest on the edge of town.
Riku in the form of Ansem meets with the King.
For a moment he raises his keyblade in defense, he recognizes Riku.
When a blindfold is tied around his eyes, Riku's figure returns.

Xion's face looks flustered.

Xion: "I'm sorry... But... I can't disappear now."
Xion: "It's because I have an important friend."
Riku: "Is that so...?"

Riku places a hand upon her shoulder.

Riku: "In that case, think about it. You should really return to your original self."

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--SEPTEMBER 2007

Interviewer: Is the beginning of 358/2 Days going to focus on Roxas' birth?

Nomura: Roxas' birth will be covered in the game's prolouge, however the game really begins at the time in which Roxas enters the Organization XIII.

Interviewer: Will this game have an ending that has already occurred, like Crisis Core had?

Nomura: Where do you think the end is? The point is, how did it get to the point where Roxas to left the Organization? The details of that will be discussed game. (Basically, we may already know the end, we just don't know how it got to that point, like Crisis Core).

Interviewer: Will we be going through Disney worlds in this story, like previous Kingdom Hearts games?

Nomura: The story does not entirely progress going from world to world, but there is a [form of?] progression in story.

Interviewer: Is the 14th Organization Member [Newly Revealed] a new character in the Kingdom Hearts Series? It appears as though the character is...a woman?

Nomura: I should bring it up now, that the XIV member is not Namine, since some people believed it to be Namine by seeing the trailer. However it will be explained as to why there's no pillar for this character, as well as why she never appeared in Kingdom Hearts 2.

Interviewer: In the trailer, four characters are shown playing simultaneously. Is this possible in game?

Nomura: Multiplayer can be played with up to four people [or less if desired]. Not only that, multiplayer gives a sense of freedom, as this mode has no effect on the story. But it is possible to choose less then four, for the multiplayer content.

Interviewer: How does the multiplayer mode progress?

Nomura: The point is to basically complete given missions. For instance, defeating an enemy or whatever the goal of the mission is. There are various goals, both big and small. There is a constant feeling of competition in multiplayer, so sometimes the player may forget just what the goal is!

Interviewer: Is multiplayer mode possible for one player only?

Nomura: Multiplayer mode is rather complicated ; we had to design a growth (leveling) system. For example, when Axel is used in Multiplayer mode, Roxas will gain some extra experience from this as well. Also, you are able to customize your character freely. (He does not go into detail about the customization part, so it is unsure what).

Interviewer: Does the 14th member fight? What kind of weapon does she use?

Nomura: We’ve already decided, but we can’t tell you right now.

Interviewer: Is the battle system the same in this game as it was in other games? I’m curious because there is no command menu there.

Nomura: The actions of the characters and the controls are different from the past games. This is because of the screen size, however there is no need to worry. For now there is no command menu, but we may decide to add one.

Interviewer: If there is no command menu, would it be because each action is added to a different button for the DS?

Nomura: Yes, but how the controls feel is different. The method is still being thought on.

Interviewer: Will there be a function where you can use the stylus, with the lower screen?

Nomura: For now, there is no function where you can use the DS Touch Screen. If we do that, the entire feeling of Kingdom Hearts may be ruined. The top screen will mostly be used for the story telling, when the lower screen isn't available. However, there will be some points where both screens will be used. Who knows, maybe later on we'll have a surprise for ourselves, and for our audience!

About Multiplayer Mode:

Nomura: Here’s an interesting feature. Whenever you complete a mission, the Organization Member's chair will rise. Also the lowest ranking member's chair will lower more. *Laughs* I wonder what will happen if you lose with Xemnas? *Laughs* The strength and game play of certain members have also been altered. Such as: Xigbar's attacks have a high range, but he has slow reloading time. Lexaeus has slow movement, but very high attack power. There is still one mysterious character though.

Interviewer: Is it Zexion?

Nomura: Yes, because he uses a book as a weapon. We’re aiming to have Zexion absorb other enemies attacks, and use their own attacks against them.

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--OCTOBER 2007

First of all, please tell us the meaning of the title 358/2 Days.

Nomura: The title was done on purpose as a code, you can only understand it after beating the game. The word Day, is attached and the progress of the game is to show how the Organization came to be, as well as the daily life of the Organization XIII. They are always faced with the duty from a place, and then have to return. The game will focus around Roxas, who is a member of the Organization. It will be an adventure game, repetition is also one of the concepts of the game.

Does the time of the game focus around when Roxas enters Organization XIII, and does it connect to Kingdom Hearts?

Nomura: Yes, after Roxas enters Organization XIII, which will only be a small part of the story, afterwards it will focus around the timeframe when Sora was asleep for the year. Roxas entering the Organization was not understood yet, but will be explained, and also the duty he is put through everyday. Finally about Roxas’ doubts of the Organization and why he leaves the Organization. This is basically the main part of the story.

Do you wish to represent something of the 3 works, by having a different color logo on each of the games announced this time?

Nomura: The reason why we chose this color for 358/2 days was to use the warm color group as a sunset in Twilight Town. I believe the story in this game will be really sad as well. It should also be noted that some of the scenarios I chose for Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ were based off the novel that focused on Roxas, which came in the Kingdom Hearts Another Report.

In a way this game will be the same as Zack in Crisis Core, where the future was already decided.

Nomura: Yes however, Roxas in Kingdom Hearts wasn’t as tragic as Zack’s was.

Why did you choose the Nintendo DS for this game?

Nomura: Well first of all, I always choose a system before developing a plan. There was a plan for multi platforming that could be easily played, so this one made it to the DS. Also, it made it more possible to use the characters of Organization XIII, the project of this work was also meant to make it a story that automatically depicted Roxas.

It’s a Wonderful world took full advantage of the Nintendo DS, will this game do the same?

Nomura: It is possible to take advantage of the functions of the DS, however we’ll be taking an opposite turn this time. We are aiming that one day it will be possible to play the game, even if it’s not just touching your way through. Also because the feeling of Kingdom Hearts’ gameplay would be too different the moment the touch pen is used.

How about the handling of the Kingdom Hearts series, since it seems you are having a hand in developing the game for the first time?

Koji: Production has to be on the spot, while researching on how it can be put onto the Nintendo DS, and be Kingdom Hearts at the same time. Also how the story will become, because besides the fans, a lot of staff in Square-Enix is also looking forward towards them, since there are many fans of Kingdom Hearts in the staff. Also the appearance of the 14th member, will be understood later on. (laughs).

Though there is a 14th Organization XIII Member, it appears to be Namine?

Nomura: It is possible to say, but no it’s not Namine.

Then who is this person?

Nomura: In Kingdom Hearts II there was Organization XIII, however even when they had 14 members it was still Organization XIII, the reason why they were never known as XIV even though they had 14 members will be understood in this game. She is a key character.

Will Sora and Riku appear in this game at all?

Hiroshi: The scene will appear as well as a battle between Riku and Roxas. As for the situations in the story where Sora’s memory is being reconstructed in the chamber where he is sleeping it will be hard for him to be in the game. However the memory will be a key point in this game. However what we don’t want to do is emphatically show connections between Roxas and Sora by memories.

This time around what will happen with the Disney Worlds?

Nomura: The relationships between people will be different as you go through the worlds.

Hiroshi: Because the game will be coming from Kingdom Hearts II there will be a lot of things people will be able to relate to, such as Roxas. However the system with the worlds will be a bit different this time around. Such as appearing worlds will be one of the things remaining but not all the worlds will always be available to visit for fun.

Will there be a basic game system just like the original Kingdom Heart games?

Hiroshi: In a way the game will be the same as the other Kingdom Hearts games, however there are some problems, such as the buttons on the DS.

Koji: This is true, because there are not as many buttons on the DS as there are on the other consoles, so it will be hard as you had to make good use of the analog, the d-pad and the L and R button. We are still examining on what we can do to get past this.

Does the story come together with single mode, and multiplayer mode?

Nomura: It is possible to say that there will be no story progress within Multiplayer mode, as that will ruin the progression of the story as well. However the leveling system in single player, and multiplayer are synchronized. The leveling system will have a huge amount of freedom this time as well such as customization which will be on of the best benefits of Multiplayer mode. However Roxas’ level will not be transferred over.

In Multiplayer mode, are all Organization XIII members playable?

Nomura: Yes, you are able to.

Hiroshi: The multiplayer mode will be treated as an alternate world, because there is a member that disappears in the single player mode as the story advances.

Koji: Because the characters will all have a unique gameplay as they all have different weapons. Though the real concerns are Demyx’s Sitar, and Zexion’s book.

How do you move on with Multiplayer mode?

Hiroshi: Basically you will receive various missions you must clear. There is also a map, and there are a lot of gimmicks added into the levels as well. Of course we are also putting bosses in multiplayer mode.

Koji: We made it so that people can play it many times, and some of the levels are short as well. There is a score attack mode too, to see who can grab it. However incase you don’t want to co-operate, we are thinking of adding elements like versus, and competitions.

Will there be a mission when you can be Xemnas, or given one to Xemnas?

Nomura: Yes, however there are methods with Xemnas we need to work with.

Hiroshi: Yeah, such as with organization XIII, the chair raises when carrying out the commission and lowers when failing. (laughs).

Koji: It is a result of multiplayer, and it depends on the stage as well. (laughs).

Nomura: I wonder what would happen if Xemnas fails (laughs).

In Multiplayer are there other elements?

Koji: In the lower screen we are thinking of possibly using the Touch Pen for drawing. If I remember, people can also use drawings on the lower screen. I want to think about a mission that could use this feature.

Messages to the Readers:

Hiroshi: Please look forward to the multiplayer that will be featured in Kingdom Hearts 358/2, also enjoy the other Kingdom Hearts games coming out.

Koji: I think it will be very unusual to be able to play as the 13th Organization, however because it is unusual it makes me happy, I want you to look forward tot his.

Nomura: Because the story in the game is a critical factor in Kingdom Hearts, it is always natural to play alone, though the multiplayer is also added for natural purposes. It might be a bit difficult to play. We plan to catch the eyes of a lot of people, and give this game a feel like “It’s a Wonderful World” as well.

FAMITSU INTERVIEW (DKΣ3713 EDITION)--AUGUST 2008

This time the trailer revealed the name and voice of the 14th member!

Nomura: The timing of revealing her voice to the public was a mistake. (Smiles) In fact, it was not intended to be released. It's because her voice becomes a hint.

Riku has officially seen the face of Xion, did he recognize it?

Nomura: Seems so, doesn't it? Roxas is the hero this time, Sora doesn't have any active involvement with the Disney characters. But for example, look at Belle and the Beast, they're interested in discovering what love is; the players will learn about the character's hearts. Roxas learns various things from the Disney characters and before long he becomes doubtful of the Organization.

Axel yells at Xion, "I'll bring you back no matter how many times it takes", but why does the word "you" refer to multiple people?

Nomura: That's still a secret as well. But Axel's determination here of "bring you back no matter how many times it takes" is connected to when he said he would bring Roxas back in Kingdom Hearts II.

The keyword "memory" also appears, but what in regards to this?

Nomura: The catch copy* of this game is "I can't remember, something important". Though in the original Kingdom Hearts the concept was to "illustrate the heart". In regards to the relationship between one's heart and one's memory, it is intimate. In this game the main characters are nobodies who don't have hearts, therefore the theme of memories is featured.

DEGEKI WII + DS--SEPTEMBER 2008

First let's talk about KH 358/2 Days, it features the nobody Roxas as the main character?

Nomura: The KH series has consistently revolved around the theme of the "heart", but now Roxas is the main character who joins up with Organization XIII who are said not to have hearts. Since the original KH, heart and memory are thought to be closely linked, therefore the theme drawn in this title is that of "memories". So this time the catch copy of the title also becomes keywords: "I can't remember, something important."

Will the adventure of Roxas proceed the same as Sora did by traveling from world to world?

Nomura: It'll be a little different. The main concern is the sticky situation with the worlds Sora has been since it can't contradict with the story of KHII. This time the objective of the events happening in the Disney worlds is to influence Roxas, gradually producing some sort of change in him. For instance, in the Beauty and the Beast world, upon seeing the Beast and Belle, is Roxas able to recognize their love?

Will the content of such scenarios move the player to tears?

Nomura: I write the base scenarios for KH every time, but this time I think the surprising content is really being able to get a feel for their quiet everyday lives. (Smiles) Personally, I don't want the contents to resemble that of previous developments. When I'm writing, I never think things like, "Oh, this'll make the player cry." That process is really up to the players, right?

Does the connection between the titles become a matter of concern?

Nomura: Naturally, there's much to keep in mind. There are various parts to think about, like "this thing has to be connected with that kind of thing," or fussing over things like the sea salt ice cream. (Smiles)

So we heard the lines spoken by the 14th member at the private event held in August.

Nomura: Really it was planned to reveal her voice in the scenes at the next event. (Smiles) It's a curious thing, everyone is wondering which character her voice connects to. Already people are guessing she is the nobody of some character, but then who is Xion really? What becomes of her heart? This will be explored more at Tokyo Game Show this Fall, so please look forward to it.

Multi player mode is prepared for this title as well, what kind of concept were in mind?

Nomura: We wanted something simple that 4 players could communicate and enjoy together, but not be something that was just going to steal the game's attention. The experience made in the main story can be utilized in multiplayer mode, likewise the experience made in multiplayer mode is useful in the main story, this system reflects them mutually.

Because the player can choose from the members of Organization XIII in multiplayer mode, it seems like an adjustment to balance them would be needed...

Nomura: Indeed. But growth among them will be a common element. In the multiplayer mode, the characters can be customized based on the progress made by Roxas in the main story. That growth is based on the parts of data being transfered, it's a fairly bold thing to do.

Speaking of boldness, in the demo version, the player could operate the camera using the lower screen, that was also a bold idea.

Nomura: Moving the camera by directly moving one's finger across the touch screen made sense, even for players who generally aren't used to that sort of thing. It was also popular among staff, though it was their opinion that "it was difficult to operate with the stylus." Therefore operating with the stylus is optional. (Smiles) Still, some people will resist touching the screen with their fingers. In the current version you could only survey left and right, I though that you wouldn't need to look up or down, but the opinion of the staff was that "it's inconvenient unless the player can look up." Will there be room for improvement? (Smiles) The current demo is only one part of the game. At this time there are more cool things to do, so please look forward to it.

FAMITSU INTERVIEW--OCTOBER 2008

The sale date was announced to be in February 2009, the trailer seemed to be all about Xion this time.

Nomura: This time we wanted to emphasize Xion in the trailer. People who like Kingdom Hearts will be thinking as they watch, "Huh? That scene!?" Maybe they'll think "Have we shown too much?", but the core parts are still unrevealed. I wanted the trailer to make the viewer's imagination run wild.
