View Full Version : What Books Do You Like?

As I've discovered that many of us are Harry Potter fans as well as Kingdom Hearts fans, I thought that maybe we had other similar tastes in books. This is a place where you can discuss the books you enjoy as well as discover new ones that you might like to read.

As I said before, I am very into Harry Potter. I also love LOTR (inc. the Hobbit), Terry Pratchett (although I haven't read many of the newer ones) and the Narnia series. These are books that I tend to read over and over again (mainly coz the kids love them too). I also love Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, Virginia Andrews, Barbara Erskine and went through a big Stephen King stage in my life though I'm over that now.

So how about you guys. What do you enjoy reading?

Which one is your favourite. I loved Prisoner of Azkaban and then I thought Goblet of Fire was brilliant but I don't think the movie did it justice.

I've read Bridget Jones which is a take off of Pride and Prejudice.

I love the order of the phoenix. It was more adventure and more frightened moments in the book, that's my thoughts.:)

OOTP & THBP are the only HP books I've read, but now they're in a skip somewhere. You get so into books that you can't put it down, so my mam had to dispose of them to let me be normal again. I'll probably get the last book, I haven't decided yet. And then at college, we had to read "A Child Called It" - very disturbing and sad. Uh...and I think that's all the books I've ever read. I mainly read magazines and newspapers anyway. Not really books.

I haven't heard where to get the kh books. I LOVE THE SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS! I'm actually writing a series of books, here's the beginning:

Cristergery Passage of the Eight Treasures

Book one: An Influence Between

Chapter One
Awaiting for a Friend

“Defeating me shall not reveal significance. Your existence will subside in triviality despite my defeat. You are mere oblivion, energy between the lives of light and darkness. You cannot envision the chaos wrought upon the earth if he were to imprison you.”

– Xalmyn

Death and decease resides within, perpetually contained by you, soon to utterly obscure the being that seizes it. Birth sustains the phenomenon of existence…but, is it in reality as unique as several may assume? Uncertainty is exhibited before every being. Questions are raised, however never responded to.
Four children gifted with supernatural talents have been found living in the outer edge of Bergen, a small region gradually coasting away from Norway.
Benjamin Leo Walker, one of two oldest children at the age of twelve, his birth date being June 6, 2650. He has been gifted with intelligence and astuteness and incorporates an I.Q rising above visualization. An Electroencephalograph (e•lec•tro•en•ceph•a•lo•graph) is an instrument for measuring and recording the electric activity of the brain. It displays an abnormal positive reading when Benjamin tests himself. The positive reading indicates fast and powerful brain waves. These waves are tiny electrical signals that come from the brain cells and nerves which send messages to each other. His mind’s electrical activity is so dominant over all others; whatever he believes or thinks will become reality. Although he cannot kill with his telepathic talents, he can scan any object and amass the data in his mind to recover afterward. Whatever Benjamin scans he can develop their unique skills. His hair is dirty blond and extends to the bottom of his ears. All eyes are on Benjamin at all times. He is generally ideal in every way achievable; he has never broken any regulation or lied in his life
Monroe Scorpio Walker is twelve years old, being a fraternal twin with Benjamin, his birth date also June 6, 2650. He is gifted with strength and protection. Muscles or a tissue composed of cells or fibers creates the contraction of which produces movement in the body. Monroe’s cells and fibers are cocooned with A chemacally altered element, Einsteinium to create a nearly indestructible metallic element. This element’s radioactivity connects instantaneously, once connected with an object, the object is shoved onward. Because the radioactivity is so forceful, it is as if a radioactive safeguard enclosing his skin; even a drop from the tallest structure cannot injure him. By focusing, he can strike the air to shift a great deal of it to assault others as if the air was a solid. Lead negates radioactivity and cocoons his vital organs. His hair is brown and is the shortest hair of the four children. Monroe is growing every day at five foot seven. Although he is as old as Benjamin, because of his strength, he considers himself as the leader of the four and will instruct people to do anything he requests.
Shannon Capricorn Walker is at the age of ten, her birth date being August 13, 2652. An ion is an electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons. A cathode is an electrical conductor through which electric current flows out of a polarized electrical device. These cathodes attract positively-charged ions, which have fewer electrons than protons. Her body is similar to a cathode; she attracts positively charged ions as if one. Her gift of manipulating shock waves allows her to use the ions and create them to travel quickly and can travel untraceably exploiting this talent. If Shannon progresses at her uppermost speed, she can influence the space time continuum, allowing her to manage space and time. She has very long dark hair that descends to her back and is the second shortest of the family at a height of four foot eleven. She wishes to steal attention from Benjamin, attempting to look faultless in front of everybody. Nonetheless, her sarcasm and arrogance pushes everyone away. The only thing that is impossible to mimic from Benjamin is his intelligence, not holding that feature herself at all. She will try anything and everything that would promote herself, even if it meant hurting her mother.
Charlotte Aquarius Walker is the youngest child at the age of seven, her birth date being April 18, 2655. She holds a special talent with an anonymous origin, the skill of manipulating the supernatural. With the articulation of unique words, also of an indefinite derivation, paranormal incidences may occur. However, because of her young age and lack of control, she may not be capable of completely maneuvering her talents. Lethargy, dizziness, nausea, confusion, irritability, and unpredictable results of excess intensity are several symptoms of this. Her hair is chocolate colored and descends to her shoulders. She is one full foot shorter then Monroe at four foot five.

The shadowy water of the North Sea glistened in the illumination of the blistering sun rise peering over the clouds afar.
Benjamin monitored the spacious ocean, viewing the several waves racing along the lucid glaze of water. After approaching the craggy sands of the beach, they appeared to retreat from the frigid climate. An arctic breeze overtook him. His clothes pursued the breeze as his hair did too. It whispered frosty, alluring messages in Benjamin’s ears in an attempt to force him to forfeit against the brutality of the iciness and return home.
He bobbed his head down and peered into the surface of the wooden wharf beneath him. Its crusty skin and detached portions cautioned Benjamin before he stepped. The rainfall converted the decrepit pier into what appeared to be a gory arm, drenched in blood which dribbled down along its boundaries.
A mammoth tear skulked along the width of the dock. Broken boards suspended on the border of it as they hung on for dear life. He stepped toward the piercing in the port, sliding his quaking hands into the pockets of his brilliantly glistening crimson jacket. Benjamin witnessed his reflection echoing his depressed gaze in the shallow water. A concoction of color trembled in dismay of the weeping winds. The multicolored tempest swam impatiently throughout the ocean, welcoming him courteously. Several pebbles were discerned by the soles of his feet. Impulsively functioning, Benjamin kicked a dark tinted nugget into the shallow depth of the ocean water. The harmful ripples kindled various discrepancies within the vivid mural. It modified into a formless delusion deceiving him into thinking that it was merely a trivial piece of abstract art.
Monroe reclined on a decaying log upon the several dunes of sand. His hand skimmed across it; it felt very firm and jagged. He studied Benjamin in his seclusion. Abigail’s lateness concerned Benjamin harshly. The truth is Monroe was also concerned if Abigail was safe.

(Sorry, can't fit much more!)
I have ninety-seven pages complete, even this part isn't complete, I just deleated it and I'm rewriting it. Don't say it's bad, because i still need to add some stuff to this very part.

It's basicly the same as Kingdom Hearts...there are four portions to a being, the soul, heart, memories, and conscience. There is an organization called The Dusk of Dawn. A main character turns evil. And many other similarities (can't fit them all!)

I'm reading this great book that I just got yesterday that called "Another Day in the Frontal Lobe". I'ts about a brain surgeon who talks about what its like to be a surgeon and, more in-depth, a neurosurgeon. And right when your starting to get bored by the book she puts in anecdotes and stories abou the amazing, sad, and funny surgical cases she has seen over the years. Seriously cheack out this book!

I love manga. I am collecting a lot of series. I definitely have my favorite authors. J.K. Rowling, Johanna Lindsey, Karen Marie Moning, Nora Roberts (aka J.D. Robb), Christine Freehan. Mostly romance writers, but hey for a life with no romance, what do you expect. Something funny, my dad who is in his mid-fifties reads romance books. He is 6 foot 6 inches, and he reads romance books. Tee hee hee-Sarah;)

I love manga, its almost as obsessive as anime, but not as expensive. I am currently collecting Fruits Basket/Furuba. They are only on volume 16 in the states, but in Japan they have release 23 volumes. I own all of Midori Days, DearS, DNAngel, and Chobits. I own all of the coresponding anime series, and was always looking for missing plot points. I mean in the anime series for Fuits Basket they don't even name all of the zodiac animals.-Sarah;)

My favorite book is Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck.
I've read all the Harry Potter books, and I've managed to read every Stephen King book, including the Dark Tower series.
Stephen King's been my favorite author since I first started reading his books, in 3rd grade.
I was kinda young to be reading his books, but I started to love them.
Other than that, I'll read anything that appeals to me.

me too :D

As far as book books go, I've gotten into Short Stories recently, and recommend Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman (American Gods is also a fantastic novel, and fans of the Movie Stardust might want to check out the novel though I didn't go much for it), Skin and other Stories by Roald Dahl, and any collections by Alexei Sayle.

The Time Traveller by Audrey NIffenegger is good, and so is The Book Theif by Markus Zusak.

If I want a quick, fun, read, I pick up one of the Princess Diaries :kitty:

I never get bored of George Orwell's 1984, and The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole is amazing ;):soracheer:

I find it strange that as much as i love to read; i haven't read the majority of the books suggested here lol. Then again, i was never really the fiction reader. I'm a big fan of science fiction in retrospect and the only series of books i have ever completed was Dune.

Its funny though how Frank Herbert by the end of the original series makes me question how good of author he really is. I tend to disagree with a lot of his rationale for his characters and their beliefs but overall; he was a good story teller.

Other than that, I'm more a graphic novel reader due to the fact in my home; there's a lot of things going on and its never really quiet moment. It sucks reading a book here but at least with a comic book; it's easier to focus. Then there's the fact that i care infinitely more about super hero's more than most forms of fiction.

If i was to rank my reading preferences, it would go as followed. It would be comic books, then science fiction, and then non-fiction. As much as i love super hero's though; I wouldn't read them in novelize form.

As for the way i like my science fiction; i wouldn't read anything in the arch type of Harry Potter. At least from what i been reading about Ender's Game; it seems that way.
