One Missed Call

ONE MISSED CALL

Well you've all heard of the Ringtone of Death, right?
Rumor has it that anyone who hears it gets a voicemail. When they hear that voicemail, they hear their own death.
Can you believe that? THEIR OWN DEATH.

Naturally, me and my friends didn't believe in it when we heard the rumors.
Naturally, me and my friends didn't believe the fortune-teller when she said we were in danger, we just laughed at her and left.
Naturally, me and my friends didn't believe it when Anthony's phone started ringing after my party Friday night. I clearly remember what he said. I'll never forget it.

"That's not my ringtone...!"
And when he tried to answer it, it stopped ringing and the familiar "Missed Call" tone rang. When he checked the voicemail, he simply laughed and said it was just some guy screaming. But when Lindsay listened, she looked a little freaked. "Anthony, that's YOUR voice!"

We still didn't believe it.
That is, we didn't believe it until the following Tuesday.

You see, Anthony had gone fishing with his dad on monday. The police figure he didn't die until Monday night. Exactly three days after he received the voicemail. When we checked his phone, we were shocked to realize that the voicemail was received on MONDAY, 8:21 P.M.

But now we have a problem.
You see, Anthony's girlfriend, Lindsay, got a similar call last night...

He likes playing pranks and is very comical. Despite his hyperactive personality, he is probably the nicest boy in town.

Melli walked through the front door of her house. She began to walk down the sidewalk, to town. As she did so, she had her ipod earphones in her ears listining to one of her favorit songs Shake it by Metro station. As she walked she did her little dance that she does when she's walking and sining to the song"tonight your falling in love.."she sung.

Minato stood against a wall, wondering about everybody.

Leah and Lindsay were kneeling on Leah's bed when the cell phone started to ring.
Leah looked over at Lindsay and then back at the cell phone.
"Anwser it..." Leah said to Lindsay, who teared up slightly and kept looking at the phone. The phone stopped ringing and a beep indicated a new voice mail.

Leah grabbed the phone and put it next to her ear. She listened intently at the voicemail as Lindsay looked on in horror as Leah's expression turned worried.

Lindsay couldn't hold it in anymore. "So...!?"
Leah was stunned. "Ohmigod, Lindsay..."

Lindsay looked back at her for a moment.
Leah looked up at her.
"Mr. Becker says you got the highest score on his final exam!"

Lindsay looked about ready to slap Leah.

Paul chuckled as he continued talking to his girlfriend, Jenna. She had just called about ten minutes ago, and so far, they were having quite a comical conversation about what had happened at school the day before. If it weren't for school, they would have never met each other, so he had school to thank for that. He continued listening to Jenna as she spoke to him over his cell phone.

"...And so after Jordan said that, I'm like, 'well, if you think I'm mean now, you don't want to see me on my period!'" The couple laughed and giggled. Paul always liked talking to Jenna. They had a lot in common. The last thing he wanted to do was lose her.

"Man, Jordan sure can be a handfull," Paul said, being a bit calm for once. "Don't mind him. I think you're fine just the way you are." Jenna giggled over the phone.

"Thanks, Paul," Jenna said softly. "I love you." The two had been going out for almost two months now. They could talk about anything for hours. "Oh, have you heard about the rumors of that weird ringtone? When you hear it and answer your cell phone, you, apparently, hear your death, and you have three days until you die. Do you believe in it?" Paul scoffed.

"Of course not," Paul said to her. "I think that's a bunch of crap made up by some college students who are just trying to scare society. I saw Channel 7 News, too, but I still don't believe it. And come on, even if it were real, I doubt it'd ever happen to me. What can a ringtone do to me? But let's talk about you, and the things I want to do to you..."

Melli kept walking and blasting her ipod. It felt like a party of one to her. She felt her phone viberate in her back pocket. She stoped in placed and pulled it out, it was a text from a friend at school"hey whats up?"the phone said."nothing much just chillin."Melli replied. She had a feeling that today was going to be long, but she didnt know why. Just then her ipod died"oh great."she said as she rolled her ipod up and put it in her other back pocket.

When Lindsay finally snapped back into reality she stared at Leah. "Leah! You scared me to death! Almost literally... You heard the voicemail I got yesterday..."

Now it was Leah's turn to be scared. "Don't talk about that, Lindsay! The voicemail was stupid."

"But look what happened to Anthony!"
"Anthony's death was an accident, Lins! Just please get over it. You're not going to --"

At that moment, Leah's polyphonic ringtone sounded and Lindsay screamed. "Geezus! Get your damn phone Leah!"

Riley walked toward leahs house. "I'll tell her today. Yeah, today I'll tell her how I feel about her." He turned from the sidewalk, walking up to Leah's front door. "Today. Today I'll tell her." He said to himself, trying to build up the courage to actually tell leah he liked her. But he couldn't stop thinking about what it would feel like if she didn't like him back. It would probably ruin their perfect friendship, and he didn't want that. But he wanted more than friendship. He loved Leah, and even if it ruined their friendship he would tell her about his feelings today. He reached forward and knocked on leahs front door. "I'll tell her." He promised himself, shifting from one foot to the other nervously as he waited for someone to answer the door.

Leah was torn between answering her phone and answering the door. "Uhh... Forget it, I'll just call them back."

She ran downstairs and looked out the thingy on the door. It was Riley. Suddenly her heart started to race. "OHMIGODITSRILEY. Okay. Okay. Okay. Uhmm.. open the door. Right."

She opened the door and looked exaperated. "Uhh hey Riley!"

"Hey Leah." Riley said nervously, a smile creeping across his face at her exasperated appearance. "Nice to uh... see you." He could barely form a complete sentence. His heart was racing as he stepped through the door.
Tell her. Tell her now and get it over with.
No, wait until later.
Tell her now while you still have the nerve to say it.
No, now's not a good time. Just wait.

Melli decided to head back to her house. As she got closer to her house her phone rang,she answered it"hello?"she asked"Melli, do you want to hang out latter today?"asked her friend Guy"sorry man, i cant. Im grounded,and cant really hang out with anyone today"she told him"well, cant you just sneak out of your house...your parients wouldnt even notice"he asked"I can try but what would we be doing?"she asked him."probaly just meet up with people from school,then go get something to eat, then Jonathin is haveing a party,and he wanted everyone there"he told her"oh that sounds fun..what time do you want to meet up?"she asked"maybe around sixish"he told her"kaykay, bye guy"she said and hung up her phone.

Leah smiled at him and was about to tell him to come in when Lindsay started yelling from upstairs. "Stop it! Get away from meeeeee--" And then she stopped.

Leah felt deja-vu and quickly ran up the stairs.

Riley ran up the stairs, just behind Leah. All thoughts of telling leah how he felt had vanished from his head. Now he was only thinking of lindsey and what could be happening to her.

Minato just knocked on the door to Leah's house."Leah,You Home?"He called out.

Leah ignored the door and kept running up the stairs. When she walked into her room, she was shocked to find Lindsay sitting in her desk chair, with her back to the door. Leah let out a sigh of relief, btu when she turned the chair around, she saw that Lindsay had a pencil going through her forehead.


Now it was Leah's turn to scream.

Riley didn't scream. He just stood in the doorway open mouthed, staring at lindsays dead body. "Lindsay... my god..." He said quietly. Then he seemed to snap to his senses. The boy who normally was shy and withdrawn became unusually confident. He ran over to the open window and looked out. The streets were empty. He pulled out his cellphone and dialed 911 quickly, giving the operator leahs adress, and telling her that lindsay had been murdered. He quickly opened leahs closet and looked around in it, then closed the door. "Leah, we need to get outside." Riley said, putting his hand on her shoulder. "The killer could still be in the house."

But Leah had no killer in mind. Lindsay's cell phone was open on the desk.
She picked it up and looked at the voicemail. It was from Mr. Becker, so she looked at the next one. It was dated Wednesday, 9:13.

It was 9:15 at the moment.

Riley looked at the phone display. "No... no, it's not that." He said in disbelief. He grabbed leahs arm and began to drag her down the stairs, toward the door. "It's just coincidence that this happened when it did." He said, shaking his head.

"Leah!!!Open the door!!!!!Is something wrong??!!"Minato yelled.

Riley threw open the door, grabbing minatos arm in his other hand. "Come on." He said, dragging minato and leah away from the house.

Leah just looked at Riley once they were away from the house. "How can you say its a coincidence! Have you HEARD the voicemai--" Leah suddenly stopped. She wasn;t having deja vu when she heard Lindsay, she had already heard it before. In the voicemail.

Lindsay had died exactly the way she died the voicemail. "Riley, she died just like the voicemail! This isnt a coincidence!" She screamed as her phone started ringing. But not because she was surprised... "That's not my ringtone...!"

"What happened?!"Minato questioned,scared of the phone,and what he had heard.

Leah ignored him and answered the phone. Instead of picking up the call, it went straight to voicemail.

She heard her own voice on the other line, really muffled and screaming.
Her eyes started to tear up and she dropped the phone. When she picked it up again, she accidentally forwarded it to someone on her list. She sniffled and checked the voicemail again. The message was gone.

Jessica walked outside in the rain with her pink umbrella protecting her overhead. "Ugh, stupid rain..." she sighed, walking towards Leah's house. She usually stopped by every day, just to see how things were going. She was surprised to see the door wide open though, so she wore a worried expression on her face. "I hope everythings okay.." she mumbled, walking faster towards her house. "Leah!"

Suddenly rileys phone rang. "Thats... thats not my..." He pulled his phone out of his pocket, shakily putting it to his ear. It was a voicemail.
He was choking, coughing, on some liquid... blood? He struggled to speak. "I love you." He heard another voice, leahs. "I love you too." Then he heard himself gasp and let out a muffled cry, then the phone was silent. A cold shiver went down his spine. He dropped the phone, staring blankly straight ahead.

Jeesica let herself inside the house, facing Leah. "What is going on?" she asked, closing her umbrella and shaking off the excess water off of it. She looked down at a phone on the ground and picked it up. "Im thinking this is yours, Riley?" she smirked, unaware of what was happnening.

"Riley! What's..." She didnt know what was going on. She remembered teh date on her voicemail before it disapeared. It was tomorrow night.

"Riley, what date is the voicemail?!"

"What??!!Why isn't anybody telling me anything??!What happened??!!"

"Tomorrow night..." Riley said blankly. "But... but it can't be real... It just can't..."

"This is awfully weird. But i cant believe it. Its too uhh movieish. Something you would see in a movie". Sean said, laughing......

"What rumor? Oh my God...people are going to die in-" Jessica remembered the "tale." "You cant be serious about this." she said, shaking her head. "No one has died from some voicemail!" she said, waving her hands.

Leah flipped out. "EVERY BODY SHUT UP!"

She knelt on the ground and started to cry. Lindsay, her best friend, was dead. She didnt care if she was going to die next.

Riley was surprised by leahs sudden outburst. He looked down at the ground, ashamed.
So much for telling her how I feel. Now She'll never like me.
No... I have to tell her soon... we're going to die tomorrow night...
No We're not, its not real...
But its all so...

"Im sorry Leah. I guess this stuff is serious business. We gotta make sure this is the way she died though" Sean said...........

"Riley.You seem.....Weird.Staring down at the ground.You alright?"Minato whispered.

Leah gathered herself as the cops arrived. Leah walked up to their car.
The male cop spoke: "How many people were present at the time the crime was committed?"

"Two, me and Riley." She points at Riley. The cop looked around the street.
"Then... Who are these people?"

Leah looked around. There were quite alot of people there. "They're...my friends."

"Yes but why are they here?"
"Cause it's a horror movie! People do random things in the middle of night while the killer slowly creeps up on them and slits their throat!"

The police officer raised his eyebrows.
"Sorry..." Leah mumbled.

"Riley.You seem.....Weird.Staring down at the ground.You alright?"Minato whispered.

"I... I don't want her to die..." Riley whispered back. He didn't care about his own death. Right now, all he could think of was somehow protecting leah. He had to make sure she would be alright, somehow.

"Leah..." Jessica said, going beside her friend. "Tell me whats wrong." she said, hugging her friend.
But it cant be true...it cant...how can a voicemail kill you?

"He doesnt have to be alright. Its Leah and us we shold be concentrating on. Lindsay died and we can be next. So come on guys. We just gotta keep our composure". Sean said..........

The police officer was confused now. "LEad to the damn body." He said finally.
Leah lead the way up the stairs and into her room, where Lindsay still sat by the desk, her blood pooling on the floor.

Leah choked up and turned away as the police officers walked towards the body and spoke something into the walkie talkie.

"I... I don't want her to die..." Riley whispered back. He didn't care about his own death. Right now, all he could think of was somehow protecting leah. He had to make sure she would be alright, somehow.

"What do you mean?Wait...Here.Let's talk over there."

"Body...?" Jessica mumbled, looking at Lindsay's dead body. The sight was too much for her. She just gasped at looked away, seeing why Leah was acting like this.

Riley nodded. "I... don't want her to be hurt... becase I love her." He was surprised at how easily the words came out of his mouth. He hadn't thought he would ever be able to tell anyone about his feeling for leah, but he had just done it.

Leah kept checking her voicemails, trying to find it. Everybody's message was still there after they had received it. Why wasnt hers?

After the cops had left, Leah said goodbye to all her friends and went back inside to go to bed, but she was haunted my Lindsay's dead body. She couldnt sleep in her room.

Riley was having the same problems sleeping. He couldn't sleep, the thought of the phone message kept coming back to him. So he pulled out his phone and dialed leahs number, hoping she'd pick up. "Come on, please pick up. I need to talk to you..."

Leah was woken up from a nightmare by her cell phone ringing. That is, her cell phone riniging the RIGHT ringtone. She checked who was calling and saw it was Riley. For once, she didnt get excited to see him call. She shut her phone and turned on her side, letting the phone ring.

The next morning, Leah woke up to the smell of bacon. She was surprised to see her roommate, downstairs cooking. "Candace? What are you doing here?"

"I live here silly!"
"Yes, but you're not usually home. You're usually at Brian's house."

"Oh, we broke up. He didn't believe in that ring tone myth and I did. He said I was a nutjob..."

Riley nervously shifted from one foot to the other, standing right in front of leahs door. "I'll tell her now..." He said to himself, nervously knocking on the door.

Sean was thinking of Lindsay., thinkin of what happened to her and how it happened. "It doesnt make any sense" He said.............

"What doesn't make any sense?"Minato asked,walking up to Sean.

As the day went on, Leah became increasingly scared. She knew that the message was dated today, btu she didnt know what time... She decided she needed to tell Riley how she felt. Afterall, he had gotten a message as well.

She walked over to his house later that day, around 5 PM and knocked on the door.

The past few days certainly were crazy. Paul didn't want to believe it, but strange things have been going on, and he didn't like them one bit. His neighbor, Lindsay, was killed. He didn't exactly know how, but he was beginning to finally suspect that her cell phone was the cause. Living next to her made Paul feel quite uneasy. He needed someone to talk to, and Jenna's cell phone was currently turned off. He quivered a bit while looking out his window from his room on the second floor of his house. He took a deep sigh as his body had gotten still again.

"Alright, Pauly boy, calm down," he said to himself. "This whole thing is just a coincidence, that's all. I mean, sure, your neighbor died, but it's alright. She's in a better place. Just cheer up. You can't turn back time, so you've gotta live for the moment before you die, too." Paul took one last sigh as he gripped tightly onto his phone. He opened it, then began rapidly pressing buttons on his keyboard on his phone. He was currently text messaging Riley. He needed to talk to him.



hey there, cousin! how you doin? i'm doin g00d rite now. anywayz, im sorry 4 the death of ur best bud, lindsey. i feel ya. she was kinda my friend 2, and havin ur neighbor die makes ya feel kinda uneasy, ya know? anywayz, im freakin out now and i need someone to talk to, so im comin over ur house right now, k? ill be there in about 4 minutes, so see ya then.

Riley was sitting at his computer, playing a game when he heard a knock at the door. He got up and walked to the door. Looking through the peep hole he saw leah.
Whew... Now I'll get a chance to tell her how I feel...
He opened the door, stepping aside to make room for leah to come in. "Hey." He said, a nervous smile on his face.

"Mom, Dad, I'm going over Riley's, okay!?" Paul shouted loudly through the house so that his parents could hear him. They were currently watching an HBO movie, and they didn't want to be interrupted by Paul. After taking his keys from the kitchen table, he quickly twisted the door knob and opened the door.

"Make sure you eat dinner at Riley's house," his mother said loudly. "I'm not cooking tonight." And with that, Paul dashed out of the house. Riley didn't live too far away, and while jogging, Paul could get to his house in no time at all. It was now that all those miles ran in track practice finally paid off.

About five minutes later, he had finally caught sight of Riley's house, and he wasn't even tired in the least from the five straight minutes of running. From the distance, he could have sworn that he saw him letting a girl in. Was it his girlfriend, perhaps?

"Don't close the door yet!!" Paul shouted. "I'm here!!" In seconds, he had arrived at Riley's doorstep, then stretched his legs out. "So, did you get my text?" Paul asked Riley. "I have some things I want to talk to you about." His eyes then shifted towards the girl known as Leah. "Who's she? Your girlfriend?" Paul chuckled.

Riley was surprised at pauls remark about leah. "Well uhhh... no. We're uhhh, just friends."

Paul chuckled even more. Shifting his eyesight from Leah to Riley back and forth, a large grin appeared on his face. He examined Leah closely, looking at her clothing, her hair, her makeup, and other features of her. He then gave Riley a sly look.

"She's cute. You've got yourself a looker, Riley," Paul said jokingly. "Heh... But I didn't come here to tease you about your to-be girlfriend. I'm here for something serious... It's about those phone call things... You know, the whole 'three days before you die' deal. Honestly, dude... I've never been so scared in my life, and I wanted to talk to you about it." He then looked back at Leah. "...Or is now a bad time?"

Minato knocked on the door."Hello,anybody home??Riley??"Minato called.

"What doesn't make any sense?"Minato asked,walking up to Sean.

"How she died. Its like a ringtone killed her. Does that make sense to you"?. Sean said to Minato, while Minato was knocking on the door...........

Leah nervously looked at her watch. She was standing outside of Riley's house and it was 7 o clock now. She didn't know what time his voice mail said, but it was undoubtedly after hers. Eventually, she called her phone service operator. "When did I receive my last call?"

"Well it says your last call was..." She paused as she checked the records. "Today at 6:30."

Leah hadnt received any calls that day. That means she was already supposed to be dead. "Oh no... Riley!" She dropped her phoen and started pounding on his door.

"What what what?"Minato asked,watching Leah pound on Riley's door.

Sean was just looking at Leah pounding on Rileys door. "I feel bad for her. Shes going through a tough time right now", he said to himself.............

Leah didnt bother to ask if she could come in. She stepped past Riley and into his foyer, looking up at the chandelier. What a shame he wont live to enjoy all of this...

"Riley, we need to go somewhere safe... Or at least figure out why the... ringtone or whatever didnt come after me. It just disappeared! I was supposed to die at 6:30! Riley, that was an hour ago! When does it say you received your voicemail?"
