I vote no. I listen to my own music when I'm on the computer, and the last thing I want to listen to is some background noise on another site. That's why I dislike sites like MySpace when the automatic music starts to play, and I've got two different songs playing at the same time in the background.

Erm.. no thank you, I'd much rather listen to Led Zeppelin than the sound of a bird tweeting when I click a link on the forums or the site. :p

Some sites have a theme song playing with the option of turning it off if you want to but I think for a lot of people, they'd really prefer to be playing their own background music. I currently have Eternity from FF X-2 playing but I'm sure it wouldn't suit everyone.

I would rather stab myself through the head with an ice pick than implement sound/music on the forums. As long as I am an Administrator there will not be any sound in relation to these forums. Sorry.

PS: For all of you that have sound on your MySpace... Nobody else likes it. It's terrible. Professionals stopped putting sound on web pages since 1998 for a reason. Get a clue.

There's not that many possibilities, you can't just customize it down to the tiniest detail. You need to also accept people's opinions instead of rejecting them.

Well, sorry, it's been rejected. If you think it's such a waste of a website then don't come here. Don't sign up for a forum if you think it sucks. Now, I'm not going to argue with you as I don't wish to have a warn on my record. ;)

If you want sound, here's an idea: Open up WinAmp, iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc etc and listen to your own music. A forum is for text. A media player is for sound. If you find this boring, then you probably also find reading boring, at which point I would call you degenerate. But that's another issue altogether. Learn to accept a forum for what it is, or go back to your TV.

Bet You Since This All Happened There Is Never Going To Be Sound

DragoonKain
02-21-2007, 12:06 AM
It's "Administrator", not "admidistrator". You want some information about sound? First of all, I have my own playlists in iTunes that I listen to. You know, like, 2000 songs or so that I want to hear. Other people have more, some have less, but we're particular about them and we don't want some overbearing website barging into our listening preferences.

Now, that is merely ONE consideration of having music on the website. The other -- and arguably more important consideration is the cost. Already we have trouble keeping up with the traffic here (that's what the MySQL errors you encounter sometimes are, it's because of too much traffic.) Alex pays for the bandwidth that we use, and having music streaming to all of our users would increase the bandwidth more than 10 fold, since music is much heavier than text and sparse images.

In addition, music on a website has to load in an ActiveX control or a Java Applet or a flash app. For IE users, the ActiveX control is fine other than the fact that it takes up system resources that a user might not want, and newer versions of IE (IE7) have security implementations that inhibit ActiveX controls. The other spectrum, cross-platform friendly is Java Applets. These things are dreadfully slow and resource dependent. I would know, I create full-sized Java programs and one of the main concerns we have with them is their slow startup times. Combine slow-startup with a website. What do you get? Unhappy users.

Flash is the best alternative but even that isn't so peachy. First, users have to have the Flash software installed. Flash isn't without its resource dependence either.

There you go, that's why I definitively say no. It's not all about the fact that a website playing music is dreadfully annoying and very -VERY- 1997. It's also got cost, speed, memory, and rollout ramifications that you obviously didn't consider very hard.

Hey you don't have to flame the Idea. Besides the majority of people liked it so shouldn't that mean its a good idea? besides. Get a clue? That wasnt very nice at all.

Music on the site really isn't necessary or costly. That would be a bit of a waste for those who own the site and I don't think we really need it. Why not just listen to music on iTunes or youtube while you are on here? It doesn't cost a thing and then people aren't complaining that the site isn't playing songs that they don't like.

If you went around and asked the American population who the current president is and 70% of them said it was Bill Clinton, would they be right? Sound on web pages is a horrible idea. Every web design book on the planet published after 1997 will tell you this. In addition, university classes that teach design have strongly advocated not using audio because it irritates most users.

Could I have been nicer? Probably.

Wasn't aware I was being watched by the Politeness Police.

I usually have my trusty moderator staff around to make sure I'm kept nice, but ole Riku has been absent as of late, so I'm getting out of hand. I suppose I'll take a little vacation too. Sorry for the troubles.

I actually really like that idea, but not the sound for whenever you click on something, maby they could play like My Sanctuary or Simple and Clean and the piano part for Organization XIII. That would be awsome or maby just like a radio of kingdom hearts stuff that would be cool

Yes, that would be cool. But from my expertise with forums I find it impossible for there to be music on a forum without there being this big bulging 'Real Player' Box at the top of the forum, or something of that sort.

What I mean by that is music can be played on forums. But there’s always a problem such as there being a 'Real Player' program on the home page of the forum... and on every other page as well.

Ok I think we got the point across. Move along nothing left to see here folks.

I think sound is a bad idea myself. Just listen to your own music while on here. Like it has been said before forums are for text.

Well now that I'm back, I'll attempt to stop such behaviour ;)

Aerith's point about some sites having On/Off options for music is true, but I've never seen that apply on a Forum. The music wouldn't be continuous as anything you click would cut it out straight away. As for sounds on the clicking, standard clicks have associated sounds set on your computer, not on the forums, so if you really desperately want something to happen, you can set it up yourself.

The idea's been rejected - Nothing more to say.
