i went to this movie today. from what i had seen in the trailers, it just looked like a cheap copy of movies like resident evil and 28 days later. i think those kinds of movies are overdone.

thankfully it wasn't really all about survival. the movie takes place in the year 2100 something or 2500 something. earth has sent out a ship called Elyssium to a planet called Tannis, the only known planet in outer space with life. The crew aboard the ship later learns about how they are the only humans remaining in the known universe, because earth has been destroyed (it wasn't too clear about this, may be a nuclear catastrophe). The ship has been sent to Tannis with thousands of people in it, and thousands of species native to earth, a Noa's ark.

the movie it self all takes place aboard the ship. the protagonists are trying to survive the mutated humans that run around the ship killing any one they see, while trying to reach the ships main reactor to reset it because it's about to explode. the filmed focuses in to factors: the psychological and survival factors. i liked the psychological side alot. the protagonists (there wasn't many) try to keep their mind in one piece, the knowledge that all of the human race is nearly extint and of the fact that they may soon die off completely, lost in the infinite sea of stars trapped with countless mutants, almost gets to all of them.

anyways, i think it's a great movie is you are having a boring day. it's not much of a horror film.

That sounds like a pretty good movie. But I have some questions.

Questions:

Did they ever find the life on Tannis?
and
Are the mutated humans the life on Tannis?
and
If the mutated humans aren't the life on Tannis, how did the humans get mutated?
and
Why is the main reactor about to explode?

Life on tannis:

well early on the movie they show that a probe sent some decades earlier had found life on Tannis. all it shows is plant life. it's only logical it think that animal life is also present, it didn't show humanoid life.

Mutated humans:

no, the mutated humans are not on tannis, they are aboard the ship. Elysium was supposed to prepare the humans onboard for adaptation on life in Tannis, but it seems that some of that went wrong, and some of them started to mutate (evolution has it's set backs).

Reactor:

the crew aboard Elysium was supposed to work in shifts. at some point, for some unknown reason (you'll find out later on the movie), the shifts stopped. some one needed to keep an eye in the reactor, but there was no one. so the reactor started to get out of line (power shortages and other malfunctions).

did that help?

Yeah, thanks, it helped.

So basically, they humans have been living on Tannis for a long time and eventually after that long time most of them began getting mutatated and going hostile?

oh damn, i got you confused!

no, like i said, the movie all takes place aboard the ship. the protagonists don't know where in space they are. all they are trying to do is reset the reactor to keep the ship from exploding, then they plan to make their way to the main bridge to take control of the ship. Tannis is just their destination, the promised land so to speak.

Oh, so they mutated because of the preparations made to adapt to life on Tannis, stuff like chemicals, and they never made it to Tannis, right?

yes, in some cases the humans mutated. not all of them, but many of them did. many others died in their sleeping pods.

and they did get to Tannis.
