I'm pretty sure this section is for the game Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix, and I'm pretty sure the game you're talking about is Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories; the version released for the PS2. The whole game is centered around using the cards, it's kinda the point of the game, lol. No, you don't have to modify your PS2 to play the game, and most likely you won't be able to play without the cards even if you do try to modify it that way.

Are you refering to RE:COM? Cards must be used in the game, same as always. And if you're playing the full Japanese version included with KH2:FM, then yes, you must your PS2. Or you could buy the American version which is the same thing with English actors and text. Still have to mod your PS2 if you're outside the US though.
