How the hell did this happen? What kind of fate made these series of events take place? I’ve always thought about all the outcomes and consequences of my actions before I’ve ever done anything. This shouldn’t have happened…what the f*** could I have done wrong? Nothing made sense as I took cover from the bullets flying behind me. Some of them hit the corner of the brick wall as I ducked behind it. Running from bounty hunters is something I’m use to, but this, this was completely different. I continued to ponder on how this whole thing had happened as I looked down at the small hand I was gripping onto so tightly. It was attached to a skinny arm that was attached to a small girl. She didn’t look much older than 13. She had blonde hair, thin and flowing down beyond her shoulders. She just looked up at me with her big ocean blue eyes that looked like two big pools of water.
I wanted to say something, but it was not the time to talk. I start running, all the while still holding the hand of the little girl. Holding on to her depleted my ability to run faster almost in half. I could have easily let go of her and let the bounty hunters have their way with her, but something inside of me made me grip her hand tighter. I heard another gun shot behind me, I didn’t see who was doing the shooting, but I soon knew who the target of the bullet was. The bullet ripped into my shoulder colliding with the bone. I felt my body fall to the ground. Everything around me started to get blurry and started spinning. The little girl telling me to get up,
her voice wasn’t like that of a 13 year old girl. To me it sounded much deeper. It was like time around me had hit the slow motion button. I blink for a few seconds then close my eyes. When I open them I’m sitting in a booth as the bartender hands me my drink. That’s right; this is where I got the information. As the bartender walked away a man in a blue over coat walked over to the booth and sat down across from me. He said nothing, but he slid towards me a card with a number on it. To anyone watching it looked like he was giving me his phone number. I nodded to him in acknowledgment and walked out of the bar leaving him to pay for my drink. I walked out of the bar and flipped the card over. On the other side was the information I was looking for. I closed my eyes again taking in a deep breath. As I opened them again, I was staring at the black top on the ground, while the little girl was screaming at me to get up. Suddenly the pain hits me again where the bullet had pierced my shoulder
“F**** s***, mother f****” I scream as I reach for my gun from its holster. I raise it with my good arm and start firing bullet after bullet at our pursuers. They duck and take cover as one of my bullets hits one of them in the leg. I hear him screaming in pain. I grab the girl and continue to run. I know what they’re doing, their trying to catch me off guard. As I take cover behind a dumpster the girl looks at me, then at the bullet hole in my shoulder. I can feel the metal grinding next to the bone every time I move my arm. The pain is nothing to me. I’ve suffered worse. As I hold my gun in my good hand I remember back when I was part of the Armies special forces. I use to be a ranger. I’ve seen and killed my fair share of humans, we were taught to not pity those who could fight anymore. Hell, I’ve killed a few of my own men because they didn’t want to fight anymore, but that day, four years ago. My mind starts to wander back to that day, when suddenly, I snap back to current situation as another bullet flies past the dumpster.
“Son of a b*** how the f*** did they find us so fast” I yelled, as I looked around for an escape route. I saw a window that lead into an abandoned building. I grabbed the girl and ran towards the window. Before they could even react I jumped throw the window, shielding the girl from all the shards of glass. As I landed hard on the wooden floors of the building, that feeling of time slowing down came back to me again. It felt like everything was spinning, and my vision was starting to blur. I blinked for a few seconds then closed my eyes. The minute I opened them I was standing in front of a door. A Pizza box in my hands. I remembered, that I had killed a Pizza delivery guy in order to sneak into the building where my target was hiding. As his body guard opened the door I walked in, they immediately took the pizza and checked it out. About two to three guards where looking at the Pizza as my target handed me three 20’s. I guess this kid was going to get a big tip, oh well. As soon as I got the money I quickly took out my gun. I had already fitted it with a silencer and I started firing. The first bullet hit my target square in the head. My second shot was to took out the first guard. I shot his hand that held his gun and then shot him in the crotch. The second and third guards had time to get their guns pointed at me, but with all my training in the army I quickly got the upper hand and shot at both of them hitting them both square in the chest. I remember standing in the middle of the room. My original target dead, two of the three guards dead and the third still in pain writhing on the floor where I had shot him in the nuts. As I left the room, I shot him in the head to put him out of his misery.
That’s when this whole mess started. Suddenly, I saw the little girl cowering in the corner of the room. I was not sure whether she was scared of me or just because of what she had just witnessed. At that point I didn’t care, I couldn’t leave any one alive who had seen this event. I walked over to the girl and aimed the gun at her, she stared up at me with those big ocean blue pools of water. She cowered in absolute terror. Then, something inside of me seemed to come alive and took over. I lowered my gun, looked into her eyes and extended my hand to her.I closed my eyes, took a deep breath. Next thing I knew, I was staring at the ceiling. The little girl was standing over me shaking me and yelling at me to get up before whoever was pounding on the doors managed to find their way in. I got up and felt the small shards of glass that had lodged themselves into my skin when we jumped through the window. I cursed under my breath as I got up and grabbed the girl’s hand. I started to looked for a way out. The only place I found was a stair case that lead up into the dark somewhere. I started to ascend the stair case with the girl in front of me. I continued to tell her it was okay to keep going. I heard a door slam open at the bottom of the stairs, the group of bounty hunters ran into the room and looked around the room and saw us on the stairs. They started to chase after us.
They continued to fire upwards towards us. When they stopped to reload I started to fire downwards at them. It was like a game of tag. A deadly game of tag. When I stopped to reload my gun, there was silence. All of a sudden, the little girl let out a blood curdling scream. I looked over and saw a bounty hunter holding a gun to her face. I didn’t know what came over me at that point. All of a sudden, I felt my body move. Without even thinking and even before the bounty hunter had a chance to think or pull the trigger, I slammed my body directly into his. The force of my impact slammed him hard into the wall behind him.
I yelled at the girl to run as fast as she could. She took off without even saying a word. She ran past both of us and as took his gun and aimed it at the girl, I grabbed his arm and snapped it. His gun flew from his hand and we were in a fist fight. I knew I could have easily taken my gun out and shot him but I was so angry at him pointing the gun at the little girl, all I wanted to do was beat the living shit out of him. I knew this bounty hunter. In fact I knew all the bounty hunters that had been chasing us. These bounty hunters always hung out with each other, talking about kills, how much money they made and their past lives before they became a bounty hunter. Even though we acted as friends, it was actually our way of keeping a close eye on each other. There was an old phrase that kept us together. “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. That was our motto, and how we lived our lives, and now we were all fighting each other. As he swung towards me, I ducked and brought my fist up and connected to his chin. Thinking that I had knocked him, when he fell back I kicked him in the teeth. Then it hit me, the reason for my condition of completely losing it and not knowing what was happening. I had a bad condition of absolutely losing my mind, going completely blank and not thinking straight. I suddenly started punching this bounty hunter even though he was knocked out. Blood started to cover my fist as I continued to punch him in the face. I couldn’t control my actions. It was like I was seduced by all the blood. It was giving me a natural high. After awhile, it was like all the pent up energy and anger had totally disappeared. It was then, that I stopped and took a deep breath.
I had apparently gone way overboard with my actions. I had beaten the man to near death. He looked so bad, no one will recognize him. I suddenly remembered where I was and what my goal was. I stood up and ran to find the girl. I didn’t know where she ran off to, each door could have been the one she ran into. However, wasn’t I checking them. My body was moving on its own until it stopped. I just smiled as I saw a golden star sticker on a door at the end of the hall. I called out to her as I opened the door. I found her sitting in the middle of a room. She looked up at me when I entered, when she saw it was me she ran to me. I knew we were trapped on this floor. If we went up towards the roof, the bounty hunters would already have managed to get up to the top floors of the building. Below us, there were the others who had been chasing us. The only thing I could think of was to try to escape out one of the windows on this floor with a fire escape. I opened the window in the room, without making a sound. I motioned to the girl to quickly go out onto the fire escape. She shook her head indicating she could not, but I knew it was the only way out of the building. I shot a bullet right past her knowing that it would get her to move.
To my amazement, she just stood there. She slowly came over to me and asked me why I was even helping her and were we going to die. I looked at her then sighed. I really did not know the answer. I only knew that she had struck a nerve with me. She reached up and took my hand, then reached up and gave me a kiss on my cheek. Then it hit me what it was about this girl that made me want to protect her. My daughter was her age, my own little girl. She reminded me of her. I told her that no matter what I would protect her and that we would be okay. We were not going to die.
“Come on, let’s get you out of here” I told her. She turned to me and asked me “If I leave what will you do” I told her, “I’ll teach these bullies not to mess with me, then I’ll come find you, okay?”.
“Do you promise?” She looked up at me again and asked me to promise and held out her pinky, just like Trixy. Just like we used to do when I went somewhere and didn’t bring her with me. She would always make me pinky swear and promise to come home. I smiled at this little girl and locked my pinky in hers and said, “I swear”.
“Lisa” “My name is Lisa” She said as she asked me my name. I told her my name, ’“Eric” and before she left she turned and said to me, “I will see you soon, remember, you pinky swore and I am going to hold you to it.” I told her I would see her soon and told her, “I have one last party to attend” She and I headed for the window and I helped her down onto the fire escape. As she headed down the fire escape my attention turned to the fire place. It’s natural gas. So I place a homemade bomb behind the logs that were still in it. I then turn the gas on full so it can fill the room. I take both my guns out and sigh. Both were silver, but both had different names on them. The gun in my left hand had the name of my daughter, Trixy, while the other had my wife’s name, Trish. Since being discharged from the army for killing the wrong man things had never been the same. While I was in the army, my wife had remarried because she was lonely. I didn’t blame her for doing it, living alone for four years would be tough on anyone.
It was twice as hard on her especially with a small child. I was glad she did get remarried, her new husband could support her and give Trixy a better father figure then I could have ever been. As I looked over at the gun with my wife’s name I remember when we were teenagers and we were sitting under a cherry blossom tree. That was the day I told her how I really felt and that I loved her. After that, we carved our names into the tree with a heart surrounding the names. 8 years later Trixy was born. It’s funny how she was born. A few months before she told me she was going to have a kid, we made out in a church confessional. I was brought back to the present situation when I heard the men in front of the door getting ready to run in and start shooting. My grip on the two guns got tighter. The blood from my bullet wound and glass wounds slide down my skin.
I was ready for them. It’s time, suddenly the door was kicked in and the gun battle started. Moments after it started, I found myself sitting against one of the pillars that held up the fire place. My two guns behind the five men who had ran into the room. One of them had a gun in my face. I looked over at the two guns and as I did I saw the images of my wife and daughter. Knowing that they were in good hands and safe made me okay with what was about to happen. I looked up at the man with the gun in my face while holding the detonator for the bomb behind my back in my right hand.. The man asked me where the girl was, I just looked at him and smiled as I opened my mouth for the last time.
"Bite me" I said as I pushed the trigger to the detonator I was thinking about thinking about my daughter and that pretty young girl with the long blonde hair and ocean blue eyes and how I had saved both of their lives tonight.
It’s said that everyone who was walking the on the streets that night heard the explosion. Some people where even passing by when the building’s 13th floor exploded. The building was so old that it collapsed from the pressure of the blast. The day after the explosion, there were news reports about gun shootings and that a gang of thugs where responsible for the explosion.
I wanted to say something, but it was not the time to talk. I start running, all the while still holding the hand of the little girl.
