View Full Version : Reminder about Signatures

Hi everyone. We are having a few issues with signatures at the moment so I thought I would post a reminder about the rules and give some samples to help you understand the guidelines.
1. No links in signatures.
This has been a bit of a problem of late. There are no links allowed at all including games and images from Final Fantasy characters. Please be aware that the image itself is a link and that to keep the image, you must remove the URL portion.
E.G. http://www.ff-fan.com/chartest/banners/cloud.jpg (http://www.ff-fan.com)
The address looks like this [URL=http://www.ff-fan.com]http://www.ff-fan.com/chartest/banners/cloud.jpg[ /IMG][ /URL]
You need to remove [URL=http://www.ff-fan.com] from the beginning and [ /URL] from the end.
2. Sig size must be between 250 pixels high and 500 pixels wide.
This size is not just for images. The height is the maximum height of all parts of your signature.
[IMG]http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/2959/untitled1vy4.gif
This is the maximum height of your sig. It is the same as 17 lines of text at normal height
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/6889/untitled2mg6.png
This pic size would allow 7 lines of text at normal height
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/4323/untitled3vn8.png
This pic size would allow 10 lines of text at normal height
Some of the problem is due to people adding friends lists. Here is an alternative way of including it without it being a list.
Friend A
Friend B
Friend C
Friend D
Friend E
Friend A Friend B Friend C Friend D Friend E
If you have any queries about what is or is not allowed then please pm me or one of the other mods. We are only too happy to help.

What happens if the URL is linking to a thread on this forum?
Is that allowed or not? Seeing as maybe the reason you don't want links is because of advertising, but seeing as you're linking to the forum... i'm not sure.
Also, is there a kb limit? I've seen some sigs here, although small, are about 1MB in size or a little less. Personally I don't mind because I have fast net, but for 56k modem users this may cause a problem.

Maybe it would be better just to be safe and keep all links in sig your signatures out. Even if it does link to here.
Better safe then sorry.

Yeh, I removed my link even though it was just linking to my gallery, but I was just wondering that's all. I don't really mind either way.
Thanks for the info Aerith:)

The only sites you can link to are from these domains: kingdomhearts3.org, kingdomhearts3.net, ffnet.org, revolved.net, finalfantasy12.net, finalfantasy13.net, finalfantasy14.net, zeldanet.net, alexsains.com (as if you'd want to, haha), and any other domain that I own. Wanna keep advertising local ;)

I have a big complaint here.
Ok, you give us the opportunity to have signatures, however, you bind us?
500x250 is a bit too little don't cha think?
I believe a rough size around a square amount. 500x500, soemthing like that, especially for people who do GFX, considering we are not allowed to link anywhere, why bound our only expression of us?
Seriously though, 500x250 dimensions is very little. Rethink-age?

We have the signature rules like they are to prevent having half of a page of just signatures alone, we'd rather have more post then signature most of the time.

Well, most of the artists in here work with GFX space just fine, to adhere it to their signatures.
In your signature you can easily include a nice, lovely signature image, (which, in my opinion and if it's actually a good one made by someone who knows GFX, will be smaller than 500x250 if it is meant to be a signature) and you even get the opportunity to mess about with text sizes and positions to add in there.
I think that is plently satisfying, if you ask me.
Yet again, viewing a thread in which you see a bigbutt signature everytime you scroll down, ain't really satisfying. 500x500... I know plently GFX. That's pretty off for a signature. Too big.
i agree, too big a sig is just...annoying.
ive been like the sig police lately, telling random people their sigs are too big
*puts on cape*
when sigs are too big, RXS is here!
RanDumb-Keyz

No, when I say 500x500 size signatures, I mean...text and all.
Not just a banner, banners are easily workable.
But what I mean to say, and don't get this the wrong way I am just putting forth my opinion about it, that what if someone wants things...for example, Lyrics to a song? They cannot. Its too big.
I dunno. Personally, its too small. On other forums [and yes I know, THIS IS NOT ANOTHER FORUM just hear me out] they give character amount limits, and amounts of images allowed, but size is only limited when members really find it annoying by the length, such as 4 banners all the same height of 150, so its up to the members and all, they have a 'Sig Report' thread and everything, and it can be brought in front of the staff or respectable members, to see what all should be done.
I have reasons to say this stuff, so don't try to say I don't understand the reasons for the sizes of signatures you have put, I just see its impossible to work with. Work with -well-.

RanDumb-Keyz
01-30-2008, 12:19 AM
Keep in mind, I have never been a part of a GFX forum, and most forums are very leniant about signature sizes.
Axizol, technically speaking...would your signature not be considered oversized by these rules? Your signature is 500 px + wide?
Axizol
01-30-2008, 12:26 AM
My signature includes the shadow code, because it's coding, it's okay because all coding on this site expands the whole length of the forum.
Wzrdto25
01-30-2008, 02:24 AM
Rows of text are like what 12
36 for axi
his images
130, 19, 33
lolz
you add the up
but then again i thought the rule was 250 high
Axizol
01-30-2008, 02:28 AM
mine, i think, is a little bit less than 250.
Anyways, coding doesn't count for lengthwise.
RanDumb-Keyz
01-30-2008, 02:30 AM
Technically, through his text...
The width [i thought] was to be 500, his pixel sizes, would be about.... 600+. Including text.
As with yours [Wt25], becasue of that little animation in your sig...that is pixels all te way to that side, if I am going by what that rule says.
See what I mean? Flaws. Flaws that are easily saw, but only by those who should, and only broken by those who think they don't need to worry about the rules.
Wzrdto25
01-30-2008, 02:32 AM
Lolz people in staff wouldnt count that they mean liek total width of one image i think
if you put two sigs next to each other they will have to be on different levels
but like with mine i dont think its extending pages
Axizol
01-30-2008, 03:05 AM
Randumb, it's coding, which is okay. If you put your animation all the way to the right like that, it would go that far right. You can have a signature that stretches from one side of your signature to the other. Plus, coding doesn't stretch the page, as a signature or series of signatures longer then a certain length would do.
RanDumb-Keyz
01-30-2008, 03:16 AM
Then how come a signature that goes past the width allowed of 500px or height of 250px that doesn't stretch the page, be considered against the rules?
Axizol
01-30-2008, 03:34 AM
yup, because the rules state to be from 500 X 250. Coding is exception.
on the coding rule, most coding is accepted for the length, but if you put spoiler tags around a million other pictures, that still counts as too big.
Then how come a signature that goes past the width allowed of 500px or height of 250px that doesn't stretch the page, be considered against the rules?
Because we don't like to be scrolling down and see signatures of the size of half a page.
No need for more discussion nor debates. The rules are the rules, I suggest you go by them, please.
Closed.

Other forums are wrong. You cannot say, "Oh uh, yeah, your sigs are fine... until we consider them too large." No. You have to say, "Okay, here is what we consider to be too large. If you go past this point we will take action." You have to draw lines in order for rules to be followable.
The reason that I am not lenient about Signatures is because nobody really uses signatures for what they're for. They're like, 'oh sweet a place i can put huge pictures of my favorite crap every time i post!! YIPEE!' and then the forum becomes this gigantic repetitive image board. Imagine browsing 4-chan and finding the same images over and over again. Not to mention the fact that you'll eventually break your mouse wheel trying to scroll through all of those 500-pixel tall signatures.
We have plenty of reason for limiting sig size. Sorry if you disagree (you're wrong for doing so, as usual).

signatures are used for distinguishing who your user is.
not for posting images of every single anime show youve ever seen in your life and then 3564853658 youtube vids

I agree too.
Signatures show uniquness and individuality.
Not to sound corny, but signatures are a priviledge not a rite.
If you find that signature limits are too small for your liking, maybe you shouldn't be allowed to have a signature at all.

Um, excuse me? I think that is something you really shouldn't tell members, personally, I mean...if that is the respect you give to members who see flaws, wtf is the point of being a member if you are harassed for having an opinion?
Anyways, other forums are right IMO, mainly because...its called freedom of expression, YES large signatures get old, but only if they are multiple images of gloryfied crap! But penalizing people who know what a good size signature is, its just not right IMO.
Also, PMing a member about their signature being too large, and saying something like "If it isn't fixed by tonight we will erase it etc etc" wouldn't you be saying you would wait til night to forcefully change it? Not 10 minutes after they get it?
Hmm. Think about it a little, because personally...I thought getting constructive critisizm, was a good thing, and taking it in and understanding it correctly, was something that would be something around...smart?
Apparently not, you all don't give members the right to voice their opinion, because if they do they are flamed and or harassed.
Please excuse all of this little debate here, for in the end...there is no point. Why make a point?

Signatures are limited for a reason, I can understand this. Your limits are unacceptable IMO, and I believe they should be changed. My opinion, flame if you really feel it necessary, but it will only prove your ignorance.
No one is going to change the signature limits they work fine, if you don't like it then you can deal with it or leave, no one else has a problem with it so either follow the rules or find a forum with a bigger limit.

The limits we chose are limits we chose for a reason. Standard signature image height is 100px. We chose a height that gives 2 of those, as well as one line of normal text. Personally, I think it's too much. You can cry about self-expression all you want. Go make a MySpace (Ugh. Okay don't. Go make an original website). Or show your self-expression in your posts.
We can sit around and argue for days about what the proper height and width of signatures should be. The fact is, we have settled on one. The way you were talking about it earlier was entirely subjective. "Yeah you can set any size you want until it gets to be annoying and people want it changed". That just doesn't work. Whether we've set our limits too low or not is nothing compared to the egregiousness of such a plan. Whoever admins a forum like that is an idiot. You can tell them I said that.
Also, about my previous remarks: I was not intending to say that you are usually wrong. I was intending to say that I am usually right. Perhaps that's slightly less insulting? I dunno, maybe it isn't. At any rate, it's still no reason to get your panties all in a bunch.

btw randumbo, freedom of expression means you can express yourself without getting arrested.
like in school, we cant curse, but we wont get arrested for cursing. thats freedom of expression.
you CAN put a sig over its size limit, and they will penalize you for it, but you wont be arrested for it. thank god i took that semester of government lol

flaming is in the rules here. Stop making a mountain out of a mole hill because you can't get your way. Arguing with our Administrator is something you'd rather not do here.
