try not to double post MissLily. Anyway, I'd have to agree with the nature element being his element. Well, not nature but more closed into flowers and petals. Kind of like Byakuya from Bleach or samurai's and how many are affiliated with flowers and cherry blossoms. So maybe Nomura was trying to bring him more into the Japanese style.... well that's my thoughts on this. But I doubt that Marluxia is gay.
