Actually, the one thing he is publicly known for is the Sharingan.... The reason he hides it is because he can't 'turn it off', and therefor it has a lot of strain on the eye. so he covers it too let the eye "sleep"^^

Obito, Kakashi and Rin was on a secret mission in the Rock country, Rin was captured and Obito went after her (Kakashi didn't want to, but changed his mind after a while). When Obito arrives where Rin is held captive, one of the Rock Nins come behind Obito and is about to kill him when Kakashi comes and saves him. The rock Nin however, was not killed in Kakashi's, so he turned invisible and came behind Obito. Kakashi heard him and jumped between them, the rock nin then cut Kakashi in the way you see his scar is, over his eye. He didn't loose his eye or anything, but he couldn't use it anymore. Because of this Obito awakened his Sharingan and they were able to defeat the two rock nins who held Rin captive. When they released her, more Rock nins came and they collapsed the cave they were inside, Obito sacreficed himself to save Kakashi and Rin. Half his body was crushed under a huge rock, he then ordered Rin to transfer His left eye with Sharingan to Kakashi's ruined left eye!

Behind Kakashi's mask is only his face.
Two theories:

First : he hides his face because he's so beautiful everyone that sees him falls in love (that would happen to me :P)

Second: Kakashi's like the living copy of his father... I don't know if this is talked in the anime series, even though in shippuuden Chio (Sasori's grandmother) mentions it...(she attack Kakashi thinking he is his father).
He does not like to remeber his father, that's why he tries to hide his face.

He has one Scar. Over his left eye from the boulder.

He doesn't keep his Sharringan a secret. He wears the mask to keep his chakra from being drained. As he is not Uchiha, it uses for chakra than usual.

I have opposition to that theory. While it may be true, I believe it is more likely the scar one from his fights, as he doesn't want to show his scars reminding people of wars, and bring up memories. I also think he just likes to mess with people's minds to make them go crazy about it. I mean looking at his personality its likely that he'd do that. Plus, its may also be because he wants to silence his breathing, as he was mainly an assassination ANBU Captain. He needs to ensure his silence and stealth until he kills the target. Then old habits die hard so he keeps wearing it.
