A lot of people say it's hard.... but then again I think it depends on the person... My cousins had to move to Japan and it only took them a month to learn the language...

I think it's essentially "what the hell?"
Here's some more for you guys:
Anata wa utsukushi desu. (keep in mind that desu is pronounced "des"). That means, "You are beautiful."
Anata ga suki desu. - I like you.
Anata wa kakoii desu. - You are handsome (ladies can use this one on their boyfriends.)
Kyou wa atsui desu. - Today is hot. (I think somebody was asking about this one.)
Urusai! - Shut up. (Urusai actually means 'noisy/loud', but when used in this situation can be mean "Shut up")

konnichiwa!!!
here are numbers in japanese:
1= ichi
2= ni
3= san
4= shi / yon
5= go
6= roku
7= shichi / nana
8= hachi
9= ku / kyu
10= ju
11= ju-ichi
12= ju-ni
13= ju-san
20= ni-ju
21= ni-ju-ichi
22= ni-ju-ni
23= ni-ju-san
30= san-ju
40= yon-ju
ect.......
japanese numbers are pretty simple. Just put the words togrther.
A good way to learn them is to use them with everyday numbers like your phone number or numbers on houses. If you use them here and there, then you'll remember them!
Are there words for 100 or 1,000 or do they just continue with ju? For example, would 273 be ni-ju-shichi-ju-san?
crazy-kyra
01-30-2007, 02:21 PM
theres a word for 100, im not sure what it is.(i'll post back with it tomorow)
Ju is just used for 10
so san-ju-ichi would literly be 3-10-1. you cant use it twice.
tomorow i'll post the words for 100, 1000, and 10,000.
DragoonKain
01-30-2007, 04:39 PM
100 is hyaku. 273 would be: ni-hyaku-nana-jyuu-san
Nailing the pronunciation is very important. 10 is actually pronounced "Jyuu" - almost like "jew". The standard international romanization of Japanese spells the word "Juu", which most people cannot read properly. The Japanese Romanization style prefers the romanization: "Jyuu" to help foreigners with pronunciation.
PS: I think 'thousand' is sen
crazy-kyra
01-31-2007, 12:45 PM
100= hyaku
200= ni-hyaku
469= shi-hyaku-roku-ju-kyu
(its gona start getting confusing now)
1000= sen
2000= ni-sen
7632= shichi-sen-roku-hyaku-san-ju-ni
9999= kyu-sen-kyu-hyaku-kyu-ju-kyu
10000= ichi-man
when you say 300 or 3000,the sound of hyaku and sen change to byaku and zen:
300= san-byaku
3000= san-zen
Pronunciation in japan is every thing.
You need to know how to pronounce the vowls.
P.S every sylobal (i really cant spell, sorry) has a vowl in it.

For one, learning 1-3 languages improves your overall IQ by activating and exercising new areas of your brain and forming neural connections that don't normally get formed. In addition, it allows you to go other places and experience other cultures the way they were meant to be experienced. It also makes you less of an ignorant person to try and accept another culture's language and way of living, even if you never plan on actually using it.

No gonna teach us Japanese then? ;)

You need a Chinese/Japanese Character Pack installed. If you're on a Mac I've no idea if you can get it, but it's an add-on to Microsoft Word/Office.

We have Microsoft word/office on the Mac :p
lol I know that, but the plugin wouldn't work on the Mac versions. I don't know if there're specific Chinese/Japanese Character plugins for Macs.

For Mac if you have your OSX CD you can install the East Asian fonts. For Windows XP, if you have your Windows CD you can go to Regional Settings on the control panel and install the East Asian font pack from that dialog.
